2018 Saha Awardees Announced
The Saha Cardiovascular Research Center is pleased to announce the recipients of the 2018 Saha Awards for Cardiovascular Research and Education. The Saha Awards are given to encourage and support staff and students with an interest in and dedication to cardiovascular medicine. Each award includes an unrestricted $1000 prize, a certificate and recognition at the University of Kentucky Gill Heart Institute Cardiovascular Research Day held on September 21, 2018 at the Lexington Convention Center. The 2018 Recipients are:
Eastern Kentucky Nursing Student Award – Nikita Tamara Watts
Nikita is currently a student in the LPN to RN Bridge Program at the Galen College of Nursing in Hazard, Kentucky. Having been an LPN for almost 10 years in the eastern Kentucky area, she plans to stay in the region and help those who do not have the transportation or financial means to receive care elsewhere. After receiving her BSN, she plans to obtain a master’s degree and to pursue a career in cardiovascular medicine.
Medical Student Award – Rahul Annabathula
Rahul is second-year medical student at the University of Kentucky College of Medicine. He is the recipient of the Beale Medical Student Scholarship, current vice president of the Internal Medicine Interest Group, and is a member of the admissions committee. Rahul’s presence in the lab has been described as driven, passionate, curious, self-aware, genuine, and well-versed. After Medical School, Rahul plans to pursue a career as an Interventional Cardiologist.
University of Kentucky Nursing Student Award – Jessica Harman
Jessica is currently seeking her PhD in the College of Nursing at the University of Kentucky. During her time at the University of Kentucky, she received the top graded abstract at the ASAIO Annual Conference, top PhD poster at the CCTS College of Nursing Showcase, and is a Robert Wood Johnson Future of Nursing Scholar. Having worked in the UK cardiovascular ICU, Jessica grew inspired to improve the quality of life of those with left ventricular assist devices. Her plans include a post-doctoral fellowship at Vanderbilt University, focusing on LVAD research. She plans on participating or creating a nursing research group at a major research university that focuses on self-management and understanding chronic cardiovascular disease and devices.
