Director, University of Kentucky Center for Clinical and Translational Sciences
Director, University of Kentucky Center for Clinical and Translational Sciences
THE OPPORTUNITY
The University of Kentucky, through the vice president for research (VPR), the executive vice president for health affairs, and the dean of the College of Medicine, seeks a collaborative, innovative clinician investigator to serve as the director of the Center for Clinical and Translational Science (CCTS). This center is funded under a CTSA (Clinical Translational Science Award) from the National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences (NCATS). This position is critical to the ongoing research growth at UK, which has had striking growth in biomedical research over the last five years.
The CCTS established in 2006 as UK’s integrated home for clinical and translational research promotes high-quality collaborative research networks locally, regionally, and nationally, leading to discoveries at each phase of the translational research continuum. The CCTS benefits from a unique multidisciplinary environment including a full complement of medical, health science, liberal arts, engineering, creative arts, professional, and agricultural colleges on a single campus. The CTSA program's impact at UK is due to significant institutional commitments and an ever-growing base of CCTS members, which spans 15 of the 16 colleges/schools. Accomplishments include the development of outstanding programs related to workforce development, community engagement, biostatistics, biomedical informatics, and pilot awards. In fact, overall University external funding has exceeded $460 million, which represents an 80% increase over the last seven years.
This director will play a critical role in contributing to the leadership, management, and oversight of the CCTS, as well as developing the policies and infrastructure for clinical research at the University. The director will report directly to the vice president of research and will work with leadership in the College of Medicine and other academic leaders to oversee the wide-ranging translational research and translational science activities of the University, including education, basic research, public health, clinical care, dissemination, and implementation research and will facilitate the integrative functions of the College of Medicine and UK HealthCare (the integrated academic health system), with an emphasis on diversity, equity and inclusion, health care delivery science, and community engagement. The CCTS Director will be responsible for shaping and expanding the CCTS’s research agenda, maintaining its grant funding, and leading the CCTS’s faculty and staff in identifying high-value, innovative research opportunities.
With the addition of the next CCTS director, the University anticipates continued development of the center on all fronts. In addition to being a service center and generating revenue, the institutional support for the programs continues to grow, spanning fiscal resources from the vice president for research, College of Medicine, UK HealthCare, and other health science colleges. Additional supplemental federal funding in the form of multiple NIH grants is ever-present. The successful candidate for this tenured appointment will be an MD/DO, PhD, or MD/PhD with demonstrated leadership in academic medicine; an inclusive vision for the health research needs of the 21st century; experience with human resources and financial management; and a team-oriented approach to leadership and management.
