Biography and Education

Ronald C. McGarry, MD, PhD, is a clinical professor in the Department of Radiation Medicine at the University of Kentucky. Prior to arriving at UK in 2006, he served as professor for the Departments of Radiation Oncology at Indiana University and the University of Nebraska Medical Center and within the Department of Paediatrics at the University of Calgary in Canada. Dr. McGarry completed his residency in radiation oncology at the University of Western Ontario London Regional Cancer Center and he interned at McMaster University—both in Canada. He earned his BSc and MSc in zoology and his PhD in microbiology/immunology from the University of Western Ontario and his MD from the University of Calgary. Certified in radiation oncology by the American Board of Radiology and in Gamma Knife technology, Dr. McGarry has immense experience in the field as one of the pioneers of stereotactic body radiation therapy in the United States. He has been a part of several important research groups and presented on the results across the world during his more than 35-year career. His clinical interests include lung cancer, lymphoma, melanoma, skin cancer, and stereotactic radiotherapy. Outside of work, Dr. McGarry enjoys clay target shooting, photography, and traveling. Personal Statement: “To be able to effectively treat a tumor with stereotactic radiation therapy, you have to be very precise—within a millimeter of accuracy. It has to be done correctly, and requires QA and experience, which we have a lot of at UK. And I consider myself a perfectionist when it comes to this. I want to make sure to get the best outcomes with the fewest side effects for my patients.”
