Shadowing Process
1. Contact Us
Email Sarah Wallett with your classification (observer/student/research learner), your availability, and your specialty preference for shadowing (otology, facial plastics, etc.). Once you have received email confirmation, you may proceed to the next step.
2. Obtain your OLE Badge
All observers must obtain an Observation Badge through the Office of Observation and Learning Experiences (OLE) prior to shadowing. We recommend beginning this process as early as possible to avoid scheduling delays.
UK medical students are not required to complete this step.
3. Shadowing Location
Once your dates have been confirmed, Sarah will provide details regarding your assigned shadowing location.
Shadowing opportunities are available in our ENT Clinic, Aesthetics Clinic, and Markey Cancer Center, as well as in the Major ORs, Center for Advanced Surgery, and Good Samaritan locations.
4. Attire
Please dress appropriately for your assigned shadowing location. Your OLE badge is required on the day of shadowing.
- Clinic: Business casual attire with visible student/observer identification. Closed-toe shoes are required. White coat, if applicable.
- Operating Room: Scrubs will be provided. Closed-toe shoes are required; tennis shoes are acceptable. Please return scrubs in our administrative office.

If the University of Kentucky declares a weather closure or activates Plan B operations, please do not report to clinic or the operating room. We can always find another shadowing date when conditions are safer.
