At 69, Hoyt “Corky” Ball knew something was wrong when his right hand began to tremble uncontrollably. His primary doctor ruled out Parkinson’s, but the prescribed medication failed to alleviate his symptoms.

Hunter Hazelwood, a third-year medical student at the University of Kentucky, wants to become a surgeon. He assumed his first hands-on experience with surgical procedures would come during residency, or at least much later in medical school.

The University of Kentucky College of Medicine welcomes a familiar face to its neurosurgery faculty next year. Randaline Barnett, MD, will join the college and UK HealthCare as a pediatric neurosurgeon, returning to her alma mater where she “fell in love” with neuroscience and officially became the first doctor in her family.

Burnout is a problem in any profession, but it is rampant in health care. This national problem has been evident recently as the COVID-19 pandemic pushed many learners, practitioners, faculty, and staff to the limit.

Alliance research initiative - researchers collaborating

Nearly three years ago, the University of Kentucky College of Medicine launched the Alliance Research Initiative to promote collaboration and mentorship through interdisciplinary research teams. With members spanning across UK departments and colleges, these teams were established to address Kentucky’s most urgent health needs.

Feb. 28 is international Rare Disease Day. Kentucky has surprisingly high rates — almost 10 times the national average — of a rare condition called Moyamoya syndrome, which causes the internal carotid arteries in the brain to become narrow or blocked.
