Congratulations to WCBL fellow Maggie Stull! Her fellowship research was one of 11 health equity posters selected for presentation of the American Medical Association-Medical Student Section (AMA-MSS) conference in Chicago, Illi. on June 9, 2023.

The title of her poster is “Investigating How Social and Structural Barriers to Vaccine Access and Medical Mistrust May Impact Vaccination Rates Among African Americans During the COVID-19 Pandemic with the Behavioral Model for Vulnerable Populations.” HerWCBL research mentor Hilary Surratt, PhD, associate professor of behavioral science, was the last author on the poster.

Last weekend an abhorrent and traumatic racial assault at University of Kentucky’s Boyd Hall was recorded and shared with the public. In the wake of this incident, the UK College of Medicine Department of Behavioral Science’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) council reiterates our commitment to strong anti-racist actions within the university and to social justice beyond its walls. Hate speech and violence cannot be tolerated and we must always proactively challenge a white supremacist culture that inspires both overt and covert acts of racism that harm our community. We stand with Kylah Spring, Kansas Perry, and with the members of the University of Kentucky community who protest and speak out against racism on UK’s campus. We will seek ways to better work toward antiracism in our teaching, research, and service.

UK College of Medicine students Rashmi Bharadwaj, Maya Cleveland, Lillian Maxwell, Darayon Moore and Maggie Stull have been awarded department of behavioral science White Coats for BlackLives fellowships.

The fellowships, initiated by Anita Fernander, PhD, former associate professor in the department of behavioral science and supported by the department’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Council, were developed to enhance medical students’ understanding of health disparities, political and social inequalities and health care inequities experienced by Black Americans.
