CHET is pleased to partner with the College of Public Health and the Center for Innovation in Population Health for the next virtual event in their series on creating an anti-racist culture in academia. Chandra L. Ford, Ph.D. Professor of Community Health Sciences, and Founding Director of the Center for the Study of Racism, Social Justice & Health at the UCLA Jonathan & Karin Fielding School of Public Health. Dr. Ford will present, “A Deeper Understanding of Racism in the COVID-19 Pandemic: Lessons from Public Health Critical Race Praxis” Tuesday March 30, 2021 from 2:00-3:30pm.

Eliminating racism is essential to achieving health equity. Doing this requires a new paradigm responsive to the influence of structural racism on health, research, and knowledge formation. Critical race theory is an emerging transdisciplinary methodology for public health research and practice intended to elucidate the effects of racism, discuss complex racial concepts, and challenge oppressive racial hierarchies. This event is intended for faculty, students, staff, and members of the community to discuss how we can collectively address racism and work toward achieving health equity. The presentation will identify critical race theory characteristics (e.g., race consciousness, emphases on contemporary societal dynamics and socially marginalized groups, and praxis between research and practice) and discuss their application to the COVID-19 pandemic.
