CHET proudly congratulates UK ASCEND scholar Dr. Radmila Choate on her selection as a 2025 Multiple Chronic Conditions (MCC) Scholar through the AGING Initiative. This national program supports early-career researchers focused on improving the lives of individuals with multiple chronic conditions.

Jimmy Robinson

As National Internship Awareness Month concludes, UKNow spotlights former CHET Graduate Research Assistant and current sociology Ph.D. student Jimmy Robinson. Robinson’s recent internship with Fayette Alliance, supported by the Kentucky Graduate Internship Scholarship, allowed him to translate academic research into real-world impact.

Dr. Shyanika Rose, CHET primary faculty member and researcher in the UK College of Medicine and Markey Cancer Center, served as an expert panelist at the 2025 Kentucky Tobacco Control Conference on April 3 at The Campbell House in Lexington. The event, themed Energizing Communities and Empowering Advocates, gathered public health leaders from across the state. We proudly congratulate SPARK cohort 5 participant Mandy Dickerson and former CHET intern Sara Dickens on being named 2025 Sarah Bennett Holmes “30 Under 30” honorees. This recognition, announced at the University of Kentucky Women’s Forum luncheon on March 26, celebrates undergraduate and alumni women who have championed the growth and well-being of women at UK and across Kentucky.

Darlingtina Esiaka

Darlingtina K. Esiaka, PhD, CHET primary faculty member and UK ASCEND scholar, has been awarded a prestigious fellowship through the Carnegie African Diaspora Fellowship Program. This summer, she will travel to Nigeria to collaborate with the Research Center for Ageing Cognition and Psychological Health at Nnamdi Azikiwe University. 

Eduardo Soria Chiroque and Botshelo Angoma

Eduardo Soria Chiroque and Botshelo Angoma have been selected to present their research at the National Conference on Undergraduate Research (NCUR) on April 7-9, 2025, at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh.

NCUR is one of the largest events for undergraduate students to share their academic work with peers, faculty and professionals across the country.

Carleigh Litteral, a CHET GRA and trainee in Dr. Justin Moore’s lab, earned first place and the crowd favorite award at the American Academy of Health Behavior poster contest in San Diego, CA.

Congratulations to Cohort 5 SPARKlers Botshelo Angoma and Mandy Dickerson, who recently presented their research findings at the 23rd annual Posters-at-the-Capitol event in Frankfort, KY on March 6th.

CHET GRA Caitlyn Grunert recently examined medical debt by census tract in Lexington along with her classmates, and created a policy brief that was presented to the Lexington-Fayette Urban County Council Budget, Finance, and Economic Development (BFED) Committee.

Three University of Kentucky College of Medicine students have been selected for the Health Disparities Research Training (HDRT) Fellowship, receiving mentorship from faculty affiliated with CHET. Gabriela Drucker, mentored by Dr. Carolyn Lauckner and Dr. Alison Gustafson, will research food insecurity interventions and their impact on child health outcomes.

Matthew Bush

Congratulations to CHET core faculty member, Matthew Bush, MD, PhD on receiving the prestigious Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE). The award, announced in mid-January by the White House, is the highest honor given by the U.S. government to outstanding, early career scientists and engineers. 

Justin Moore and Kristin McQuerry

Congratulations to CHET primary faculty member Dr. Justin Moore and his colleague Dr. Kristen McQuerry on being awarded a research grant for their annual BIOSTAT PRODIGY program. BIOSTAT PRODIGY is a one-week summer enrichment program for Lexington high school students to learn statistical programming in R. Last year they successfully mentored students from around Lexington.
