Congratulations to the pathology faculty and residents on all their accomplishments. Below are recent accomplishments in July and August.

 

  • Derek Allison, MD recently collaborated on Chapter 10 of the Third Edition of the Bethesda System for Reporting Thyroid Cytopathology which can be found at this link https://link.springer.com/chapter/10.1007/978-3-031-28046-7_10

  • Dr. Allison is also the co-investigator on a recently approved NCI grant titled “Targeting the Plk1/Pdcd4/mTORC2 Signaling to Treat Castration-Resistant Prostate Cancer”.  Dr. Allison is collaborating with the Department of Toxicology and Cancer Biology on this project.  Congratulations on both of these achievements!

  • Thèrése Bocklage, MD is the PI of a newly awarded Markey Cancer Center “Run for the Roses” grant. In addition to Dr. Bocklage, Akif Guney, MD, Jing Di, MD, PhD, Hafsa Nebbache, MD, Emily Bachert, MD, Justin Miller, PhD, Dava Piecoro, MD, Kim Absher, MD, and Shulin Zhang, MD, PhD are collaborators on this grant project.  Below are the details, congratulations to all!

    The title is: Identifying Key Features of the Tumor Immune Microenvironment in Small Cell Lung Carcinoma to Optimize Immunotherapy Selection.

    Non-department collaborators are: Christine Brainson, Eric Durbin, Ashish Maskey, and Susanne Arnold.

    *Per Dr. Bocklage - Key to obtaining the grant were our initial pilot data showing a statistically significant distinct immune protein signature in exceptional versus typical small cell lung cancer survivors. The pilot data were obtained from digital spatial profiling performed in the BPTP SRF and OG SRF. Dr. Miller performed the statistical analyses.

  • Cody Bumgardner, PhD is a co-investigator on a National Institute on Drug Abuse grant titled “Diversity Supplement for Hammerslag – Rapid Actionable Data for Opioid Response in Kentucky (RADOR-KY)”.  Dr. Bumgardner is collaborating with the UK College of Medicine Department of Behavioral Science.  Excellent work Dr. Bumgardner!

  • Wael Ibrahim, MD is first author on a recent article published in the journal Transfusion.  The title of his article is “Solvent/detergent treated pooled human plasma can decrease the recurrence of allergic transfusion reactions in pediatric, adolescent, and young adult patients” and can be found at this link https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/37395640/ Congratulations Dr. Ibrahim!

  • Aaron Shmookler, MD was recently named to the ASCP’s “40 Under Forty” list!  The ASCP 40 Under Forty program recognizes members under the age of 40 for their achievements and leadership qualities that are making an impact on pathology and laboratory medicine. Forty pathologists, laboratory professionals, and residents are chosen annually through an application or nomination process. The program has recognized worthy members of the laboratory team both nationally and internationally. From the 40 Under Forty honorees, five individuals are selected as the 40 Under Forty Top Five through a combination of public voting and committee selection.  Congratulations Dr. Shmookler!

  • Derek Allison, MD has received a formal invitation to speak in Tokyo, Japan at a joint cytopathology course sponsored by the Johns Hopkins University, the American Society of Cytopathology, and the Japanese Society of Clinical Cytology.  He will be giving two hours of presentations in addition to a 1-hour slide session in January 2024.  Excellent work Dr. Allison!
  • Jing Di, MD, PhD, Leo Yenwongfai, MD and Shulin Zhang, MD, PhD have had their abstract, "Validation of QuantStudio 3D Digital PCR Assay for Monitoring Minimal Residual Disease in Acute Myeloid Leukemia", accepted for both the AMP 2023 Annual Meeting & Expo and for publication in the November 2023 The Journal of Molecular Diagnostics. Congratulations to
