Leanna Brignola has had a very busy month! On GME Professional’s Day (August 15), she was nominated for two awards, the “Rising Star” and the “Distinguished Program Administrators” by GME leadership. Shortly after, she successfully passed her Training Administrators of Graduate Medical Education (TAGME) certification! This is a professional credential awarded to individuals who demonstrate advanced knowledge and competency in the administration of residency and fellowship programs within GME. And finally, Leanna is getting married on September 21! Congratulations on all of these Leanna!
Dr. Cody Bumgardner has also been very busy! He has been invited by the CAP to be a panelist discussing “General AI Use in Non-billing Purposes” on September 23, 2025 at 2:00pm ET. In addition, Dr. Bumgardner has been invited by the Association for Pathology Informatics to present “The Role of Foundation Models, Generative AK/LLMs, and Agentic AI in Pathology” on November 6, 2025 at their “DP-AI 9.0” meeting in Chicago, IL. Lastly, Dr. Bumgardner is a PI on a newly funded grant by the National Science Foundation titled “Democratizing AI Training and Access Statewide (Collaborative Research)”. Our Clinical Chemistry team has been very busy! Drs. Ibrahim Choucair, Robert Maynard and Hind Malaeb each participated significantly in the recent 2025 Association for Diagnostics and Laboratory Medicine (ADLM)) Annual Scientific Meeting at the end of July. The conference focuses on advancing laboratory medicine through education, innovation, and collaboration. It features the world’s largest exhibit hall showcasing cutting edge technologies in laboratory medicine. See below for their efforts. Congratulations to all of you!
Dr. Ibrahim Choucair presented a round table titled “Beyond urine: Unveiling toxicological enigmas and interpreting complex toxicology cases in different matrices”. In addition, he was co-author on two poster presentations. The first was with Dr. Jessica Wolford titled “Evaluation of Ethylene Glycol Stability in Blood and Serum: Impact of Pre-Analytical Conditions and Performance Comparison of an Automated Enzymatic Assay vs. Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry in Clinical Toxicology” and the second was with Dr. Hind Malaeb titled “As Xylazine Use Declines, Is Mitragynine Becoming the New Trend in Illicit Drug Use?”
Dr. Robert Maynard was a speaker for a Half-Day University Course titled “Putting some PEP in your step: A hands-on guide and best practices for everyday protein electrophoresis and immunotyping interpretation.” In addition, Dr. Maynard wrote three articles for the CLN Daily, the official publication of the ADLM Annual Meeting. The articles are titled: “From data to diagnosis: The global push to advance genomic medicine” which can be found here: Cover Mon; “From facepalms to fixes: Tackling lab compliance together” which can be found here: Practices; and “A winning strategy: Laboratory stewardship in action” which can be found here: Stewardship.
Dr. Hind Malaeb presented a roundtable titled “Reduced Hemolysis and Outliers in High Sensitivity Troponin Testing” and a poster titled “As Xylazine Use Declines, Is Mitragynine Becoming the New Trend in Illicit Drug Use?”
Dr. Derek Allison is first author on a recently published article in the journal Cancer Cytopathology titled “Diagnostic Challenges in Urinary Cytology: Practical Insights From The Paris System”. This was a collaboration with Dr. VandenBussche at The Johns Hopkins Hospital and was recently featured as a “Practice Essential” by the journal. Congratulations Dr. Allison!
Drs. Derek Allison and Mohamed Hussein co-authored a 2025 TICP-A: Genetic Syndromes - Digital Slide Program for Touch Imprint/Crush Preparations titled “FH-Deficient Renal Cell Carcinoma”. The article can be found here: 2025 TICP-A: Touch Imprint/Crush Preparation Program | College of American Pathologists. As a side note, Dr. Hussein was the only trainee involved in this program. Great work both of you!
Drs. Peter Nelson and Wangxia Wang have been very busy! Both were recently listed in a database compiled by Stanford University in a partnership with Elsevier as being amongst the top 2% of the world’s most-cited researchers! Dr. Jeongeun Do is first author on an article accepted for publication in the journal Human Pathology titled “INSM1: A highly sensitive marker for primary and metastatic Merkel cell carcinoma, superior to SOX11, pancytokeratin , and CK20”. Dr. Faisal Hassan has been elected to serve on the Graduate Medical Education Committee for the UK College of Medicine. Congratulation Dr. Hassan!
Dr. Eun Lee is part of the Markey Cancer Center research team that recently “identified a mechanism by which a gut hormone contributes to fatty liver disease, offering potential new targets for treating the common condition”. Dr. Justin Miller has a student, Blake Byer, who recently received the prestigious Goldwater Scholarship. Blake works with Dr. Miller developing software tools for genetic risk prediction of Alzheimer’s. Dr. Allison presented “Tissue vs. Liquid Biopsy: Choosing the Best Biomarker Test for Your Patient” and Dr. Bocklage presented “Small Cell Lung Cancer: Dynamic Heterogeneity and Implications for Precision Therapy”. Dr. Allison was also the co-chair of this event and moderated two sessions.

Dr. Kim Absher is a co-investigator on a newly funded grant from the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute titled “Investigating the Role of HDL-Associated Serum Amyloid A in Sepsis-induced Acute Lung Injury and Mortality”. This is a collaboration with investigators from the Departments of Internal Medicine, Physiology, Surgery, Toxicology and Cancer Biology and the Cardiovascular Research Center. Dr. Derek Allison wrote an article for January’s CAP Today titled “Pearls and pitfalls in renal mass biopsy”. This article was a collaboration with clinicians from the Division of Cancer Biostatistics, Markey Cancer Center, the Division of Hematology, and the Kentucky Cancer Registry here at UK. The topic of discussion will be “Care, After the End” and he will be joined by Jeremy Garbat-Welch, M.Div. and Vicky Kaak, RN. Lunch will be served and all are welcome to attend. Second, he has been appointed by the Office of Medical Education to the roles of Pathology Thread Leader and Histology Thread Leader. Wael Ibrahim, MD, Dennis Williams, MD, and Aaron Shmookler, MD, collaborated on an abstract that has been accepted for presentation at the AABB Annual Meeting in Oct. 2024 in Houston, Tx. The title is “Anti-D Alloimmunization Rate Following the Transfusion of RhD-Positive Apheresis Platelets to RhD-Negative Patients: A Retrospective Study”. Great work, everyone!
Eun Lee, MD, is a co-investigator on a newly funded grant from the Colorectal Cancer Alliance titled “Developing New Therapeutic Approaches for BRAFV600E Colorectal Cancer”. This grant is a collaboration with the department of toxicology and cancer biology and the Markey-McDowell Cancer Network. Rob Maynard, PhD has been busy! First, he has been invited to record a podcast episode for the journal Clinical Chemistry. The topic will be “Personalized Reproductive Hormone Monitoring in Sweat” and will be available at the link. Second, he has been selected to give an oral presentation at the 2024 International CPOCT Symposium in San Diego, Calif. from Sept. 25-27, 2024. Justin Rueckert, MD, is very busy! First, he has been asked to join a panel discussion for Schwartz Rounds (a multidisciplinary forum where clinical caregivers discuss social and emotional issues) on Monday, Sept. 16, 2024 from Noon-1 p.m. in CTW014 Wethington Bldg). The topic of discussion will be “Care, After the End” and he will be joined by Jeremy Garbat-Welch, M.Div. and Vicky Kaak, RN. Lunch will be served and all are welcome to attend. Second, he has been appointed by the Office of Medical Education to the roles of Pathology Thread Leader and Histology Thread Leader. These roles involve coordination of foundational science topics throughout the undergraduate medical curriculum and will involve collaboration with course directors, course faculty, clerkship directors, and OME leadership.
