Welcome to Kentucky!  Our new UK Pediatric Emergency Medicine (PEM) fellowship started in 2021 with a focus on developing an excellent learning experience across clinical care, teaching, administration, and research.  Our goal is to grow the PEM fellow in a collegial environment so they can reach their full potential and achieve their personal and academic goals. The UK PEM Fellowship faculty have graduated from Pediatrics, Emergency Medicine, and Emergency Medicine-Pediatrics residencies before completing PEM fellowships, and these diverse training backgrounds provide a rich and unique culture for education in the fellowship program.

We strongly consider graduates of both Pediatrics and Emergency Medicine residencies and believe that graduates of both residencies have valuable contributions to the PEM fellowship and create a well-rounded PEM fellowship program.

Our PEM fellowship is available as a 3-year program for Pediatrics residency-trained applicants and as a 2-year program for Emergency Medicine residency-trained applicants.

Opened in 2010, the Makenna David Pediatric Emergency Center serves as the primary Pediatric referral facility for Eastern and Central Kentucky and provides exceptional care with approximately 30,000 annual visits.  It is one of only two Level I Pediatric Trauma Centers in the state of Kentucky and is staffed with a fantastic group of physician faculty, pediatric-specific nurses, child life specialists, 24-hour dedicated ED pharmacists, social workers, and pediatric resources.  The departments of Emergency Medicine and Pediatrics work closely together to ensure high quality patient care.  And if you enjoy teaching, there are ample opportunities for educating medical students, residents, APPs, and EMS.

Kentucky offers a delightful blend of southern charm, beautiful landscapes, sophisticated city life and outdoor recreation.  From moonbows, Bourbon trails, rolling hills and horse country, the Kentucky Derby, Keeneland Horse track, climbing, kayaking and hiking at Red River Gorge, exploring Mammoth Cave, intense college sports, eclectic food experiences from southern to refined, numerous concerts, and the arts scene, Kentucky has something for everyone.

We are very passionate about our PEM fellowship and would be delighted to answer any questions you may have!
