Vanderford Honored With Hartford-Nicholson Award From SRAI
The Society of Research Administrators International will be presenting its 2020 Hartford-Nicholson Award to University of Kentucky faculty Nathan Vanderford. Vanderford, an assistant professor in the Department of Toxicology and Cancer Biology in the UK College of Medicine, will receive the award at the SRAI Virtual Annual Meeting in October. He was chosen for the award due to his advocacy, dedication and continuous contributions of knowledge to SRAI as the editor-in-chief of its Journal of Research Administration. In 2018, Vanderford was also named a recipient of the SRAI Mid-Career Level Excellence Award. Vanderford also serves as assistant director for research at the UK Markey Cancer Center, where he oversees a special oncology training program for Appalachian students, ACTION. He is a lead editor for "The Cancer Crisis in Appalachia: Kentucky Students Take ACTION," a book of essays compiled from young Kentucky students involved with the program. Additionally, he is co-author of ReSearch: A Career Guide for Scientists, which focuses on educating trainees in the science community about their various career options after obtaining a doctorate degree. He was presented with the 2017 UK Alumni Association’s Great Teacher Award for outstanding teaching performance. His course, “Preparing Future Professionals,” is open to all students regardless of their training stage and offers instruction on basic skill sets needed in a competitive job market.
