Please join us as we congratulate Beth Garvy, PhD, who recently received a leadership title change to reflect her growing responsibilities and ensure equity in her position. The new title went into effect July 1, 2022.
Dr. Garvy administers educational programs, curriculum, technology, and services for postdoctoral, graduate, and undergraduate students in biomedical education. She is responsible for approving appointments for postdoctoral fellows and scholars and visiting scholars in the college. She has the primary responsibility of approving the ACE plan instructional distribution of effort for all basic science faculty.
In FY21-22, Dr. Garvy expanded the role by leading the development of formal mentoring training for faculty and mentees. Additionally, she has implemented college-wide changes in graduate student and postdoctoral scholar salaries and stipends and continues to monitor progress in this area.
She has increased involvement in the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) accreditation process and continues to manage SACSCOC compliance in biomedical education. Dr. Garvy has taken initiative in making changes to prevent learner mistreatment, including introducing formal assessments of learning environment to the department.
Her title change from associate dean to senior associate dean will mirror the other college deans who oversee learners in medical student education and graduate medical education. She is also a professor of microbiology, immunology, and molecular genetics.
