Retired University of Kentucky professor Dr. Ardis D. Hoven was elected the first female chair of the World Medical Association (WMA) at the organization’s 200th council meeting in Oslo, Norway.
Hoven has served as chair of the American Medical Association delegation to the WMA for the past few years and now will serve a two-year term as chair of the WMA. The WMA is the international organization representing physicians from 111 national medical associations.
Dr. J. David Richardson, a 1970 graduate of the University of Kentucky College of Medicine, was elected president-elect of the American College of Surgeons (ACS) last month during the College’s Annual Business Meeting that was held during its 2014 Clinical Congress in San Francisco, Calif.
Richardson is currently professor of surgery and vice chair of the Department of Surgery at University of Louisville School of Medicine.
The University of Kentucky Board of Trustees Saturday adopted a sweeping statement of principles, directing President Eli Capilouto to focus on the "most pressing" needs of Kentucky by determining how best to grow UK's research enterprise through strategic investments in facilities and talent.
"The challenges are overwhelming, but we can be up to the task of making a difference," Capilouto said. "These are not easy issues, but they must be our issues.
When University of Kentucky medical student Callie Dowdy tells fellow students she delivered four babies in one month during her obstetrics rotation in Western Kentucky, she emphasizes that fact that she was a primary care provider.
She didn’t stand in the back or the room or watch over the shoulder — she was the first person to hold the babies.
When you ask UK alum and former astronaut Story Musgrave about being the only person to have traveled to space in five different shuttles, he hesitates.
"I never come for a triumph, I come for tomorrow," said the 80-year-old in a recent interview.
That attitude propelled Musgrave to a career that has led him to succeed in a wide range of fields – from serving in the Marines to scientific research to practicing medicine to teaching to space exploration, just to name a few.

The 2012 Distinguished Alumnus Awards were presented to Dr. Jeffrey Cutler of Bethesda, Md., and Dr. William N. Offutt IV of Georgetown, Ky., both from the class of 1968.
