The Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion is excited to announce the University of Kentucky College of Medicine’s selection as an inaugural member of the National Center for Pre-Faculty Development, providing a significant opportunity to enrich the education experience and ensure the promotion of career development for all individuals, including those underrepresented within academia.

As one of 22 academic medical centers and national organizations in participation, the UK College of Medicine will be part of the center’s work toward Building the Next Generation of Academic Physicians (BNGAP). Over the past decade, this initiative has helped diversify medicine, a field in which BIPOC, sexual gender minorities, and women currently are underrepresented.

The National Center for Pre-Faculty Development will provide students and trainees with foundational self-efficacy, knowledge, skills, and experiences to be successfully appointed and eventually promoted within an academic institution. To meet this objective, the center will support implementation of research-based, standardized conferences and webinars. Though many will be directed toward learners from underrepresented backgrounds in medical education, the themes, topics, and suggestions will be applicable to learners throughout the College of Medicine.

There will be opportunities for College of Medicine learners, faculty, and staff to become involved, including free BNGAP membership and free participation in the virtual Mid-Year BNGAP Pre-Faculty Development Conference on Sept. 25 and 26.

  • Faculty and staff can learn through high-yield sessions how to support the retention of diverse groups of residents 12:30-5 p.m. on Sept. 25.
  • Students and trainees can learn more about the search for academic residencies and fellowships, with sessions running from 11:30 a.m.-5 p.m. on Sept. 26.
  • Registration can be completed at this link: http://bngap.org/mid-year-conference/ (On the registration page, select “pay later” and follow directions to secure free registration.)
  • A full conference schedule can be found below:

The College of Medicine’s participation in the BNGAP initiative correlates with its goals in the Strategic Plan’s Diversity and Inclusion Pillar to enhance all forms of diversity through education, recruitment, retention, and promotion while fostering an environment of inclusive excellence.
