As a young student who was proficient in science, Dr. Eseosa Ighodaro, always saw herself pursuing a career in medicine. But it wasn’t until applying to medical school that she discovered there was another path she wanted to follow.

William W. Stoops, PhD, professor within the University of Kentucky College of Medicine, has been elected as president of the College on Problems of Drug Dependence (CPDD), the longest standing group in the U.S. dedicated to addressing issues of drug dependence and abuse.

As the oldest girl of nine children, Jazmyne Barney always knew she served an important role in her family. She was the “mom of the sibling group,” as she calls it, and because of this, she felt she had the responsibility to succeed so her siblings could have someone to look up to.

Capt. Eric Stedje-Larsen, MD, and Cmdr. Ryan Phillips, MD, had worked with one another in the Navy for years, but on opposite sides of the country, Dr. Stedje-Larsen on the east coast in Portsmouth, Va., and Dr. Phillips on the west coast in San Diego. It wasn’t until last May that they met in person while attending a training in California.

That’s when they learned they had something significant in common – they’re both graduates of the University of Kentucky College of Medicine.

The University of Kentucky College of Medicine is proud to share that two of our faculty members, Lindsay Ragsdale, MD, and Jessica McFarlin, MD, have been named Emerging Leaders in Hospice and Palliative Medicine by the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine (AAHPM). Dr. Ragsdale and Dr. McFarlin were among 40 health care professionals selected out of more than 120 nominations for the honor, which recognizes career accomplishments, involvement with the AAHPM, student and resident mentoring, and charitable work. Three first-year medical students from the University of Kentucky College of Medicine who have a passion for expanding health care access have produced an original and creative video, “Nosotros Para Vosotros,” meaning “Us for You” that explains the health care needs of underserved populations at home and around the world.

In the spring of 2016, the University of Kentucky hired Dr. Robert DiPaola as the new dean for the UK College of Medicine. He had previously been the director of the Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey and vice chancellor for cancer programs at the Rutgers Biomedical and Health Sciences Center.

University of Kentucky Provost Tim Tracy and Executive Vice President for Health Affairs Dr. Michael Karpf announced Monday that Dr. Robert DiPaola, director of the Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey and Vice Chancellor for Cancer Programs, Rutgers Biomedical and Health Sciences, has been named dean of the University of Kentucky College of Medicine. Retired University of Kentucky professor Dr. Ardis D. Hoven was elected the first female chair of the World Medical Association (WMA) at the organization’s 200th council meeting in Oslo, Norway.

Hoven has served as chair of the American Medical Association delegation to the WMA for the past few years and now will serve a two-year term as chair of the WMA. The WMA is the international organization representing physicians from 111 national medical associations.

Dr. J. David Richardson, a 1970 graduate of the University of Kentucky College of Medicine, was elected president-elect of the American College of Surgeons (ACS) last month during the College’s Annual Business Meeting that was held during its 2014 Clinical Congress in San Francisco, Calif. Richardson is currently professor of surgery and vice chair of the Department of Surgery at University of Louisville School of Medicine.

The University of Kentucky Board of Trustees Saturday adopted a sweeping statement of principles, directing President Eli Capilouto to focus on the "most pressing" needs of Kentucky by determining how best to grow UK's research enterprise through strategic investments in facilities and talent. "The challenges are overwhelming, but we can be up to the task of making a difference," Capilouto said. "These are not easy issues, but they must be our issues.

When University of Kentucky medical student Callie Dowdy tells fellow students she delivered four babies in one month during her obstetrics rotation in Western Kentucky, she emphasizes that fact that she was a primary care provider. She didn’t stand in the back or the room or watch over the shoulder — she was the first person to hold the babies.

When you ask UK alum and former astronaut Story Musgrave about being the only person to have traveled to space in five different shuttles, he hesitates.

"I never come for a triumph, I come for tomorrow," said the 80-year-old in a recent interview. 

That attitude propelled Musgrave to a career that has led him to succeed in a wide range of fields – from serving in the Marines to scientific research to practicing medicine to teaching to space exploration, just to name a few.

The University of Kentucky Medical Alumni Association honored five physicians during its recent Annual Alumni Reunion and Family Weekend held Oct. 5-6. The 2012 Distinguished Alumnus Awards were presented to Dr. Jeffrey Cutler of Bethesda, Md., and Dr. William N. Offutt IV of Georgetown, Ky., both from the class of 1968.
