UK HealthCare has announced plans to open 64 more beds in Pavilion A of the University of Kentucky Albert B. Chandler Hospital subject to approval by the Board of Trustees. The eighth floor of the 12-story pavilion is targeted for completion in the Fall of 2014, said Dr. Michael Karpf, UK executive vice president for health affairs. "We are in critical need of more beds for our growing cardiovascular program," Karpf said.

He's only 27, but Johnny Cebak is a veteran of combat in Iraq, a University of Kentucky doctoral candidate studying neurotrauma, a survivor of brain trauma and post-traumatic stress disorder himself, and a National Guard officer. He has even been on the cover of the New York Times.

Four students from the University of Kentucky have been selected as recipients of Fulbright U.S. Student Program scholarships. The UK recipients are among 1,900 U.S. citizens who will travel abroad for the 2013-2014 academic year through the prestigious program. In addition, one of UK's four winners, medical student Juliana Odetunde, received one of only five prestigious Fulbright-Fogarty awards, which promote the expansion of research in public health and clinical research in resource-limited settings.

The Center on Trauma and Children (CTAC) has moved to the College of Medicine to facilitate and enhance the translational research activities of the center. CTAC is dedicated to the enhancement of the health and well-being of children and their families through research, service and dissemination of information about child abuse and trauma. Alzheimer's disease is on the rise, but the University of Kentucky Sanders-Brown Center on Aging is a major player in the fight against this debilitating condition. Since the founding of the SBCoA in 1979, and the federal funding of the SBCoA Alzheimer's Disease Center (ADC) in 1985, the center has made many contributions to the body of knowledge about Alzheimer's and related brain aging conditions. The facts about Alzheimer's disease are staggering. An estimated 5.2 million Americans and approximately 34 million people worldwide have Alzheimer’s and other dementias.
UK is one of a few universities to have all six health science colleges (Medicine, Nursing, Dentistry, Pharmacy, Public Health and Health Sciences) all on the same university campus making it well-positioned for interprofessional health care education and collaborative research.

The undergraduate curriculum for the College of Medicine promotes excellence in the foundational scientific and clinical principles supporting the delivery of compassionate, cutting-edge, preventive and therapeutic clinical care. The College prides itself on continually reviewing its curriculum with revisions and additions that represent best practices in modern medicine, correlated with principles of professionalism and cultural competence. The curriculum provides the nowledge base, attitudes and skills necessary for students to become outstanding physicians in the 21st century.

In 2013, UK medical students matched into 22 different specialties for residency. Twenty-two percent elected to stay within the UK HealthCare system, and an additional nine percent elected to stay in Kentucky for residency.

High school seniors and college students interested in pursuing careers as physicians or dentists are eligible to participate in summer programs at the University of Kentucky offered through its Professional Education Preparation Program. The UK PEPP Scholars Summer Program, designed for students from medically underserved areas, is open to high school seniors.

George Goshua, a second-year medical student was recently awarded first place at Cureus Fall 2012 International Poster Competition. His poster titled, “Review of Assessment Tools Utilized Worldwide in the Evaluation of Surgical Trainees: A Focus on Non-Technical Skills,” was awarded in the category of Quality Improvement. The Center for Structural Biology makes available to the research community at the University of Kentucky services and equipment for protein production and characterization. Protein production equipment includes equipment for bacterial, yeast, insect and mammalian cell culture, devices for cell-cracking and automated chromatography systems for protein and peptide purification.
The University of Kentucky Medical Alumni Association honored five physicians during its recent Annual Alumni Reunion and Family Weekend held Oct. 5-6. The 2012 Distinguished Alumnus Awards were presented to Dr. Jeffrey Cutler of Bethesda, Md., and Dr. William N. Offutt IV of Georgetown, Ky., both from the class of 1968.

UK is one of a few medical schools to offer a tuition guarantee program. This guarantees each entering class a set tuition that will remain constant for the four years they are enrolled in medical school.
