The Center for Structural Biology makes available to the research community at the University of Kentucky services and equipment for protein production and characterization. Protein production equipment includes equipment for bacterial, yeast, insect and mammalian cell culture, devices for cell-cracking and automated chromatography systems for protein and peptide purification. Protein characterization instruments include analytical centrifugation, spectroscopic instrumentation (circular dichroism, dynamic light scattering, fluorometers), a TIRF illuminated microscope for single molecule and cellular fluorescence experiments and state-of-the-art instruments for protein crystal growth and collection of X-ray data. The Center oversees facilities for X-ray crystallography at Argonne National Laboratory (SERCAT). Computational resources for structure determination and modeling are available. A Ph.D. is available to educate users in the use of instruments and to provide services.
