Anika Hartz, PhD, was recently promoted to professor in the UK College of Medicine Department of Pharmacology and Nutritional Sciences. The secret to her success is rooted in her love for science and pursuing groundbreaking discoveries.

Q: What inspired you to go into academia and research?

A: I never planned on becoming a scientist or faculty member. At the time, my PhD mentor, Dr. David S. Miller, infected me with his contagious enthusiasm for science. David’s assurance, continuous mentoring, and his love and passion for science convinced me that science is the best career choice because it meant being allowed to play in a “sandbox” every day and get paid for it.

Q: Why did you decide to work toward tenure/a promotion?

A: I never worked towards tenure or promotion. I fell in love with science and this love for science motivates me to this day.

Q: What advice do you have for others going through the process?

A: Love what you are doing. The rest falls into place.

Q:  Beyond your faculty role, what are some organizations and programs you’re involved with in the college, UK HealthCare, and UK?

A: I’m involved in the University of Heidelberg Scholarship Committee, Institutional Biosafety Committee, and the Markesbery Symposium Planning Committee through the Sanders-Brown Center on Aging.

Q: What work have you been most proud of during your career?

A: Working with an international and diverse team on translational projects while raising three children.
