How to Join

The Translation of Research Interventions in Practice, Populations, and Policy Leadership (TRIPPPLe) Alliance represents a diverse group of researchers engaged in interventional studies across a broad range of topic areas. Individuals who are interested in 1) interventional research in clinical and/or community settings, 2) dissemination and implementation research, and 3) clinical trials are encouraged to join the TRIPPPLe Alliance.

This alliance seeks to identify mentors and mentees across the University of Kentucky campus in order to foster collaborative relationships and promote career development of early stage investigators. Researchers within University of Kentucky research priority areas are strongly encouraged to join this alliance. Members are encouraged to attend monthly alliance meetings and participate in the mentor-mentee teams identified by this alliance.

Summary

Kentucky has one of the highest premature death rates in the nation, ranking in the top 10 for the leading causes of mortality including cancer, substance use, diabetes and obesity, and cardiovascular disease. Kentuckians from rural, largely underserved areas suffer disproportionately from these serious medical conditions and are among those most likely to die prematurely. Developing and delivering innovative and effective treatments is essential, particularly for those with the greatest needs. The challenge is to speed up the process of bringing important research discoveries made within a laboratory or other controlled settings into clinics and communities.

Funded by the University of Kentucky College of Medicine’s Alliance Research Initiative, TRIPPPLe will answer this challenge by applying the methods of dissemination and implementation to speed up the delivery of new and effective research interventions to a larger and more diverse population. TRIPPPLe will concentrate on promoting evidence-based research into the broader community through the practice of medicine, population health, and health policy. To meet these goals, the TRIPPPLe team is comprised of three cores, each with its own leader.

The administrative core is led by Matthew Bush, MD, PhD, associate professor in the department of otolaryngology. His research focuses on increasing access to health care in underserved, vulnerable populations. TRIPPPLe’s administrative core will offer researchers assistance on regulatory or financial needs related to research. TRIPPPLe will use this core to announce, review, fund, and monitor pilot grants focused on Dissemination and Implementation research.

The methodology research core is led by Nancy Schoenberg, PhD, professor in the department of behavioral science. Dr. Schoenberg’s research addresses health inequities, particularly among rural residents, and she will assist with translating interventional research into a broader context. This core’s activities include bringing national experts to campus, a research consultative service, a pilot grant program, and catalyzing competitive extramural grant submission.

The training core is led by Hannah Knudsen, PhD, professor in the department of behavioral science. Dr. Knudson focuses on the addiction treatment system throughout Kentucky, and she will help UK researchers, both early-stage and established, expand their knowledge on research methods and create collaborations. The training core includes a mentorship program to help new investigators identify and maintain research mentors at UK to support their research career development.
