Ophthalmic genetics, the branch of medicine concerned with inherited eye diseases, is a relatively new subspecialty with less than 100 practitioners worldwide. In July 2017, the team at UK Advanced Eye Care became home to one of these rare practitioners, Dr. Ramiro Maldonado.

Barbara Nikolajczyk has always had a passion for scientific exploration and discovery. After losing her father to complications from type 2 diabetes, she decided to delve into research examining the connection between inflammation and the disease.

The Barnstable Brown Gala, the premier Kentucky Derby Gala, today donated over $1 million from proceeds from its 2018 Gala to the University of Kentucky Barnstable Brown Diabetes Center. Since 2008, the Barnstable Brown family has donated more than $15 million to the center from proceeds from the annual Barnstable Brown Derby Eve Gala held in Louisville, Kentucky, including this year's 30th Gala. The 2018 U.S. News & World Report ranked diabetes care at the Barnstable Brown Diabetes Center 33rd in the nation.

(Aug. 24, 2018)  ̶  The executive committee of University of Kentucky Board of Trustees on Aug. 23 approved a plan for UK HealthCare to expand outpatient care throughout the Bluegrass and increase surgical capacity through a joint venture for Lexington Surgery Center.

The joint venture, with UK HealthCare as the majority partner, is with Surgical Care Affiliates, LLC (SCA), the current majority owner of Lexington Surgery Center and part of health services leader Optum.

The Kentucky State Loan Repayment Program (KSLRP) is now accepting applications for 2018-2019.

The KSLRP is a loan repayment assistance program that helps to recruit and retain health care providers in rural and underserved communities across the state. Applicants selected to participate in the competitive program agree to work full time for two years providing primary care services at an eligible site located in a Health Professional Shortage Area. Participants receive tax-free student loan repayment for their service commitment.

Christopher Azbell, MD, joins University of Kentucky department of Otolaryngology in August of 2018. He just recently completed his Pediatric Otolaryngology fellowship at Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh, UPMC, before arriving here in Lexington. Dr. Azbell earned his medical degree from from the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Medicine and then went on to complete his residency at University of Louisville. Welcome Dr. Azbell!

Alok Saini, MD, joined the University of Kentucky department of Otolaryngology in August of 2018. He is a fellowship trained rhinologist and skull base surgeon. Dr. Saini earned his medical degree from the University of Tennessee Health Science Center in Memphis, TN before completing his residency at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in NYC. He then completed his fellowship from the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston. Welcome Dr. Saini!
