The UK College of Medicine and Department of Surgery announced that Michael E. Sekela, MD, officially took over as Chief of the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery on April 1, 2018. Dr. Sekela succeeds Dr. Sibu Saha, who has held the leadership position since 2013.

On April 1, Dr. Sibu Saha ended his term as Chief of the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery at the University of Kentucky. Succeeding him as chief, Dr. Michael Sekela inherits a division with fully accredited fellowship and I-6 residency programs, a re-energized heart transplant program, and a clinical faculty composed of experienced and highly skilled cardiac, thoracic, transplant, and congenital heart surgeons.

LEXINGTON, Ky. (May 9, 2018) — "Cerebral Venous Sinus Thrombosis" didn't show up as a question on Destiny Taschner's ACT test.  But if it had, this high schooler would have been able to give its definition.

The UK Research 2017 Annual Report shares the economic impact of UK research, strategic plan progress, national rankings and innovative federally funded research projects in substance abuse, cancer, diabetes and obesity, cardiovascular diseases, neuroscience and aging, and energy.

Few states have been harder hit by the opioid epidemic than Kentucky.

The third annual Gordon Hyde Lectureship in Vascular Surgery on Wednesday morning, April 11, will feature noted vascular surgeon, John “Jeb” Hallett, MD, Clinical Professor of Surgery at Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston.

The lecture will begin at 6:45 am in the MN263 Lecture Hall at UK Chandler Hospital. A breakfast reception will precede the lecture.

Applications are now being accepted for the 2018 Saha Awards. 

The Saha Awards are given to encourage and support staff and students with an interest in and dedication to cardiovascular medicine. Each award includes an unrestricted $1000 prize, a certificate and recognition at the University of Kentucky Gill Heart Institute Cardiovascular Research Day held on September 21, 2018 at the Lexington Convention Center.
