A Word about an “Honorarium” and the Proposal Budget:

If a proposal includes a payment for a speaker (either internal to UK or external), it is important to note that these fees should not be characterized as an “honorarium”.  At UK, an “honorarium” is classified as a gift (it is basically a gift intended to “honor” a person).  Such payments are not allowable expenses on proposal budgets.  If you would like to pay a speaker on a grant, please work with your Sponsored Research Administrative Services (SRAS) Grants Proposal Specialist (GPS) to ensure that these payments are either based on the speaker’s effort (if internal UK faculty) or on some other type of fee (such as a consultant fee for an external speaker).  For external speakers, please allow additional time for processing.
