UK Awarded $87 Million to Lead Effort in Combating Nation's Opioid Epidemic

Congrats to the entire dedicated team of researchers who put this proposal together, organized the NIH site visit and continue to foster long-standing, impactful relationships across our state! Sharon Walsh, director of UK’s Center on Drug and Alcohol Research, is leading a team of more than 200 researchers, staff, and state and community partners involved in the HEALing Communities study, part of the NIH HEAL (Helping to End Addiction Long-term) Initiative. The four-year study has an ambitious but profoundly important goal: reducing opioid overdose deaths by 40 percent in 16 counties that represent more than a third of Kentucky’s population.

UK Hosts SEC Chief Research Officers

Twice a year the Chief Research Officers of the SEC meet at a member institution to talk about best practices, collaborations and new developments in research and innovation within each of their institutions. In May 2019 UK hosted this meeting for the first time. The SEC group toured the Healthy Kentucky Research Building and UK staff presented topics including management of multidisciplinary research space, multi-institutional platforms to promote IP/tech transfer, programs and policies for prevention of research misconduct, and declaring institutional research priorities/strengths.

UKRF Board Meeting Held in Healthy Kentucky Research Building

TUK Research hosted the annual meeting of the University of Kentucky Research Foundation (UKRF) in space that is not yet complete in the new Healthy Kentucky Research Building to highlight the completion of phase I construction and demonstrate the work ahead and need for additional resources to help complete phase II and phase III construction.
