Who Can Join WIMS?

In short: anyone!

If you are working within the fields of medicine and science in any capacity—whether that be as a learner, trainee, faculty, or staff—and are interested in advancing your career, developing your skill set, collaborating with others, building your network, and making friends, WIMS is waiting for you.

There are several ways to become involved with WIMS—we hope you can join us at whatever commitment level is best for you right now.

At-Large Members

Anyone can become an at-large member! At-large members receive WIMS updates via the mailing list, are encouraged to attend events, apply for awards, and participate in programs, and are invited to become more involved by serving as at-large representatives for WIMS subcommittees.

Liaison Members

Liaison members are representatives from the College of Medicine administration who attend Executive Committee meetings, offer insight and support from their roles, and participate in WIMS events and programs. They are encouraged to participate in a WIMS subcommittee if their availability allows.

Executive Committee

The Executive Committee (EC) comprises the WIMS Chair, Chair Elect, and subcommittee co-chairs, who have been nominated and voted into their positions by the current EC. Members of the EC have voting privileges and implement WIMS programs, initiatives, and events via subcommittees.

WIMS Subcommittees

The eight WIMS subcommittees are the driving force behind everything the organization does, from awards programs to educational workshops to community service to social events. Read on to learn more about these groups and how they support WIMS.

Awards and Honors

The Awards and Honors subcommittee oversees the annual nomination and award cycles for the WIMS Recognition Awards, WIMS Booster Awards, and WIMS Travel Awards. They define the awards, publish selection criteria, distribute calls for nominations, make selections, present awards, and facilitate award fulfilment.

Communications

The Communications subcommittee ensures that the College of Medicine and WIMS members stay up to date on WIMS news. They take photos at events, manage the social media and web presence of WIMS, and maintain an online library of articles, slideshows, documents, and references.

Education and Professional Development

The Education and Professional Development subcommittee manages learning and development opportunities. They create, plan, promote, and implement programs such as the annual mentorship and professional development course Putting the Personal in Personal Development (P3D).

Membership and Nominating

The Membership and Nominating committee maintains member engagement and encourages at-large participation in WIMS. They solicit subcommittee co-chair nominations, reach out to potential members, make appointments to the executive committee, and communicate with individuals interested in joining WIMS.

Operations, Planning, and Bylaws

The Operations, Planning, and Bylaws subcommittee serves as a task force for the WIMS bylaws and strategic plan. They collect data and updates from subcommittees, store and organize subcommittee data, track strategic planning metrics, oversee the drafting, approval, and implementation of changes to the WIMS bylaws, and assist with the triennial WIMS Report.

Outreach

The Outreach subcommittee arranges opportunities for WIMS members to engage with the community. They seek out and create service opportunities, plan activities, recruit volunteers, and coordinate day-of for community events.

Programming

The Programming committee plans educational and social events to support the WIMS mission, including the annual WIMS Day. They create ideas for events, plan event logistics, work with Communications subcommittee to promote events, and facilitate events day-of.

Student and Trainee

The Student and Trainee subcommittee oversees programming aimed at engaging College of Medicine students and trainees. They plan and implement programs such as student and trainee social events, the WIMS Mentorship Program, and the WIMS Book Club.
