The Keeneland Concours Pediatric Simulation Center is an exciting new upgrade to the Pediatrics Residency Program at Kentucky Children’s Hospital. Through the generous donation of the Keeneland Concours Group, we have been able to purchase major upgrades to our simulation center. Our center now offers task training in ultrasound guided, central venous catheter insertion, as well as lumbar punctures. We currently have four high fidelity child simulators, three of which are tetherless.
Dr. Michael R. Dobbs, associate professor and interim chair of the University of Kentucky College of Medicine's Department of Neurology and director of the UK HealthCare/Norton Healthcare Stroke Network, has edited and published the latest edition of "Psychiatric Clinics of North America" titled “Psychiatric Manifestations of Neurotoxins.” Building on work that he had done with co-editor Dan Rusyniak of Indiana University for Neurologic Clinics, this compilation addresses cognitive and behavioral aspects of neurotoxic exposures.
Effective August 1, 2013, Dr. Darrell Jennings will step down from his role as Senior Associate Dean for Medical Education to focus primarily on his role as chair in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine including the department’s acquisition of the Medical Directorship of the State Public Health Reference Lab in Frankfort. The dates for the 2014 AHEC Summer Health Career Camps are set!  The Summer Enrichment Program, for rising high school juniors will run from Sunday, June 22 - Friday, July 18, 2014.  The Health Researchers Youth Academy, for rising high school seniors, will run from Sunday, July 6 - Friday July 18, 2014.

 Laboratory notebooks should err on the side of completeness. Someone from outside your lab should be able to read what was done without your verbal interpretation.  General guidelines for lab notebooks include:

•  Permanently bound book (not spiral), with acid-free paper
•  Pages should be consecutively numbered 
•  Dated entries 
•  Signed entries 
•  Record entries chronologically 
•  Recorded in English 
•  Each entry should stand on it's own

Dr. Jayakrishna Ambati, professor and vice chair in the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences and professor of physiology at the University of Kentucky College of Medicine, will receive the 2013 Mark Brothers Award from the Indiana University School of Medicine. UK HealthCare has announced additional roles for three physicians in key patient-care areas. Dr. Laura Fanucchi has been named the UK HealthCare Enterprise Medical Director for Translational Care. Transitions in patient care are a high priority throughout the nation. There is a need for greater collaboration across the entire care continuum from acute care hospital to home, ambulatory clinics and post-acute care facilities.

The Southeast Kentucky Area Health Education Center (AHEC) and the University of Kentucky (UK) Center of Excellence in Rural Health (CERH) hosted the annual Summer Health Careers Enrichment Camp June 12-25, 2013.  The camp, which is a joint project between the two organizations, brings together ninth and tenth graders from Perry and surrounding counties for a two-week camp aimed at enhancing students’ interest in health care careers.

The Kentucky Office of Rural Health will host the 2013 Region B Meeting of the southeastern State Offices of Rural Health.  The meeting is convened in association with the National Organization of State Offices of Rural Health and will be held in Lexington, Ky., August 6-8, 2013.
