Sanders-Brown Dinner to Feature Coach Matthew Mitchell
Peter Nelson, the R.C.Durr Endowed Professor in Alzheimer's disease, sits in his office and explains how the efforts of the Sanders-Brown Center on Aging Foundation allowed him and his colleagues to identify and name a new age-related disease called PART.
"To make an Alzheimer's diagnosis you need to see two things together in a patient’s brain: amyloid plaques and structures called neurofibrillary tangles composed of a protein called tau, but autopsy studies on patients with dementia have demonstrated that some have tangles but no plaques," said Nelson who has both a medical degree and Ph.D

High School Senior Gains Valuable Experience in Lab Work on Stroke Treatment
A Fayette County high school student has been named a finalist for the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair for her work in a UK lab run by Dr. Greg Bix and Dr. Justin Fraser.
Ishi Aron, a senior at Paul Laurence Dunbar High School, won first place in the Biomedical and Health Sciences division at the Kentucky State Science Fair on March 28.
UK Students Named Among Global Health Case Competition Winners
Congratulations to University of Kentucky students who placed 2nd in the Emory Global Health Institute's 4th Annual International Global Health Case Competition. UK students competed among an elite group of 24 teams in the competition held in Atlanta, GA in March. Teams were given one week to develop strategies for reducing gun violence in Honduras and presented their proposals to a panel judges at the Rollins School of Public Health.

On Thursday, April 2nd, our fellows competed against each other in Echo Jeopardy. This event was hosted by world class cardiologist Dr. John Gorcsan from the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. Dr. Gorcsan has gained an international reputation for this fun and educational event.
The Christ Hospital Health Network Joins Markey Affiliate Network
The Christ Hospital Health Network (TCHHN) in Cincinnati, Oh., announced today an affiliation with the University of Kentucky Markey Cancer Center, the state's first and only National Cancer Institute-designated cancer center. The affiliation will provide patients with more cancer treatment options and advanced education and research.
