Congratulations to Madeline Dunfee, a CHET graduate research assistant, who was awarded a 2021 James S. Brown Graduate Student Award for Research. Maddie is is an MD/PhD student, and is in the fifth year of her program to earn both an MD from the College of Medicine and a Ph.D. in Epidemiology and Biostatistics from the College of Public Health.
Human Development Institute Graduate Training Opportunities
The University of Kentucky Human Development Institute is leading a five year Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental Disabilities (LEND) grant from the Health Resources and Services Administration Maternal and Child Health Bureau in partnership with the University of Louisville and Eastern Kentucky University. LEND programs share the overall mission of improving the health of infants, children and adolescents with, or at risk for, neurodevelopmental and related disabilities including autism spectrum disorder (ASD).

UK Study Reveals Characteristics of SARS-CoV-2 Spike Protein
A new University of Kentucky College of Medicine study published in the Journal of Biological Chemistry provides foundational information about SARS-CoV-2’s spike protein.
The spike protein is found on the surface of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, and is responsible for its entry into host cells. Because of this function, it is the focus of most COVID-19 vaccines including the Pfizer/BioNTech and Moderna mRNA vaccines.

UK Medical Student Lee Kiefer Takes the Gold in Women's Foil
University of Kentucky College of Medicine student and Lexington native Lee Kiefer became the first American to win a gold medal in an individual foil event defeating reigning Olympic champion Inna Deriglazova (ROC) 15-13 in Tokyo. She also earned Team USA's first fencing medal of the delayed 2020 Olympics and ninth medal since the game began.

Now, Dutch is taking on even more research responsibilities, as she was recently appointed vice dean of research for the UK College of Medicine. In her new role, she will oversee and encourage research, from basic areas to clinical applications and more for the college.
