Objective:

UK Otolaryngology recently hosted a cadaver dissection course for its residents and its neurosurgery colleagues. Partnering with Stryker Corporation, the lab spanned April 12-13, 2021, and involved endoscopic sinus and anterior skull base dissection, as well as facial plastic and reconstructive surgery. UK Otolaryngology residents received nearly 12 hours of hands-on dissection experience and teaching to augment what is being taught in the operating rooms and clinics.

The Center for Health Equity Transformation (CHET, https://chet.med.uky.edu/) welcomes applications for a graduate research assistantship focused on innovative, transdisciplinary and impactful health equities research. CHET’s focal research involves preventing and improving outcomes from cancer, substance use, cardiovascular disease, and diabetes/obesity in vulnerable, traditionally underserved populations.

Thanks to the hard work and dedication of UK HealthCare and University of Kentucky employees and volunteers, hundreds of thousands of emergency authorized vaccines have been distributed to Kentuckians. The COVID-19 vaccination clinic at Kroger Field surpassed 200,000 vaccines in the beginning of April.

The NIH Center of Biomedical Research Excellence (COBRE) on Obesity and Cardiovascular Diseases, in collaboration with the Center for Clinical and Translational Sciences (CCTS) announce the availability of limited funds to support pilot projects focused on research examining obesity-associated diseases.

April 16-17, 2021, was the Spring meeting of the KY-TN Branch of the American Society for Microbiology (see attached program). It was hosted virtually by U of L. Dr. Erin Garcia was an invited speaker, and Jamila Tucker from Dr. Sarah D'Orazio's lab gave a 10 minute talk. Jamila's oral presentation entitled “Intracellular Replication Promotes Colonization of the MLN by Protecting Listeria monocytogenes from Phagocyte Clearance and Exogenous Lipoate Starvation” was awarded second place among graduate student presentations!

LEXINGTON, Ky. (April 19, 2021) — One out of three individuals in the U.S. complain of sleep disturbances in their lifetime and 10% of the general population meet the diagnostic criteria of chronic sleep disorders. That number has risen among elderly individuals to 48% and over 50% among pregnant women.
