Alan Daugherty, PhD, professor of physiology and medicine, was elected to the leadership of the Sarnoff Cardiovascular Research Foundation Board of Directors.
Dr. Daugherty currently serves as chair of the UK College of Medicine Department of Physiology, beginning his ninth year in 2024 and serving as only the eighth chair of the department in its 130-year history. He is also the Gill Foundation Chair of Preventive Cardiology, director of the Saha Cardiovascular Research Center and the Saha Aortic Center, and associate vice president for research core facilities
The Sarnoff Cardiovascular Research Foundation’s mission is to develop medical students throughout their careers into the next generation of leaders in cardiovascular innovation, research, and medicine. Dr. Daugherty serves as vice chair-elect on the foundation’s board of directors. His leadership role will continue to evolve over the next six years, serving consecutive two-year terms as vice chair, then chair, and later past chair, of the board.
Through their Sarnoff Fellowship Program, the foundation provides funding for medical students to engage in a one-year research fellowship at a lab that is not the same institute as their medical school. It offers medical students enrolled in accredited U.S. medical schools the opportunity to spend a year conducting intensive work in a biomedical research facility in the United States. Applications are especially encouraged from second and third-year medical students. More information about the fellowship opportunity can be found here.
