The University of Kentucky College of Medicine is thrilled to announce that after an extensive search, Emily DeFranco, DO, MS, has been selected to serve as the new chair of obstetrics and gynecology.
Dr. DeFranco, an alumna of the UK College of Medicine’s obstetrics and gynecology residency program, will join the leadership in January 2024.
“We are blessed that Dr. DeFranco will return to her residency alma mater to join us in advancing education, care, and discovery” said Dean Charles Griffith, MD, MSPH. “Dr. DeFranco’s vast expertise will help our obstetrics and gynecology department continue to expand opportunities for faculty, staff, and trainees, particularly in research which is an important focus.”
Dr. DeFranco currently serves as a professor of clinical medicine; the division director of maternal-fetal medicine; and the vice chair of obstetrics, research, and faculty development at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. In these roles, she has led significant program growth and improved access to care for high-risk pregnancies beyond the Cincinnati metropolitan area. Her mentorship in clinical career development and research education has been an asset to UC over the past 15 years, helping to advance the department’s academic reputation..
She is a highly regarded expert in her field with an extensive research background as evidenced by hundreds of peer-reviewed publications and national scientific presentations.
In addition to her clinical expertise and research portfolio, Dr. DeFranco is, a respected leader and mentor to learners of all levels, and she is dedicated to improving the quality of care to women through teaching and practice of evidence-based medicine.
Dr. DeFranco earned her doctorate at Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences, as well as a master’s degree from the University of Cincinnati in clinical and translational research. She completed her obstetrics and gynecology residency at the UK College of Medicine followed by a fellowship in maternal-fetal medicine at Washington University in St. Louis.
UK College of Medicine leadership thanks the prior department chair, Dr. Hansen, and current acting chair, Dr. Rone, for setting their department on a path to success and is excited for what can be accomplished under Dr. DeFranco’s direction.
Finally, the college extends a thank you to the search committee that worked to recruit Dr. DeFranco. That work was much appreciated.
