First Year Radiology Residents received their first lead aprons recently. A service provided by the Department, the Residents receive personalized lead aprons and safety glasses. Custom fitted for each individual, lead aprons and safety glasses are valuable and necessary equipment for Radiologists.

Dr. Ronan Tynan to Speak, Perform at Sanders-Brown Dinner Nov. 11
Singer, physician, athlete and inspirational speaker Dr. Ronan Tynan is no stranger to adversity. When Tynan was 20, his legs had to be amputated below the knee after an auto accident caused serious complications. Just weeks after the operation, he was climbing up the steps of his college dorm, and within a year, he was winning gold medals in the Paralympics as a multitalented athlete.
Between 1981 and 1984, Tynan amassed 18 gold medals and 14 world records, of which he still holds nine.
Dr. Saha Receives Master Educator Award

Congratulations to Dr. Sibu Saha as the recipient of the Abraham Flexner Master Educator Award. October 9th, 2013. Today the University of Kentucky, College of Medicine Academic Convocation and Awards Day, awarded Dr. Sibu Saha one of the oldest peer reviewed medical school awards in the country.
Markesbery Symposium on Aging and Dementia Offers Resources for Community
More than five million Americans have Alzheimer's disease, and millions more are affected by their roles as family member, friend or caregiver to an individual with a memory disorder. In its efforts to educate and inform, the UK Sanders-Brown Center on Aging is hosting the Third Annual Markesbery Symposium on Aging and Dementia, Nov. 15 and 16. This symposium is in honor of the founding director of the Sanders-Brown Center on Aging, Dr. William R. Markesbery.
This two-day program will offer sessions for both scientific and community audiences.
Hoellein Receives Educational Research Award
University of Kentucky College of Medicine physician Dr. Andrew Hoellein was awarded the prestigous 2013 Clerkship Directors in Internal Medicine (CDIM) Charles H. Griffith III Educational Research Award, for his significant contributions to educational research as a Clerkship Director in Internal Medicine.
CDIM is the organization of individuals responsible for teaching internal medicine to medical students. The organization is a part of the Alliance for Academic Internal Medicine (AAIM).
Hoellein was presented with the award at the 2013 CDIM National Meeting held in New Orleans on Oct. 5.
Ernie Scott has been appointed Director of the Kentucky Office of Rural Health (KORH)
I am pleased to announce that Ernie Scott has been appointed Director of the Kentucky Office of Rural Health (KORH), effective November 1.
Mr. Scott joined the KORH in January 2012 as Rural Project Manager. Prior to his role at the KORH, he was employed by Mountain Comprehensive Health Corporation as the Director of Planning and Special Projects. Ernie brings over 15 years of valuable rural healthcare experience ranging from clinic to hospital to academic settings.

New UK Study Shows Insight into Breast Cancer Cell Migration
A new study by University of Kentucky Markey Cancer Center researchers Min Chen and Kathleen O’Connor shows that a specific protein may assist breast cancer cells in metastasizing.
Tumor cells escape a primary tumor by a process called invasion. This process of invasion requires cells to migrate or move through tissue.
