A postdoctoral position is available immediately at the University of Kentucky to study the molecular mechanisms of metabolic disorders and atherosclerosis.  Our laboratory mainly focuses on the role of NF-kB (J Exp Med, 2014; Arterioscler Thromb Vasc Biol, 2012) and nuclear receptor PXR (Environ Health Perspect, 2012; Mol Pharmacol, 2013; JAHA 2014; Mol Endocrinol, 2015) in the pathogenesis of obesity and cardiovascular disease.  More details can be found at the following webpage: http://pharmns.med.uky.edu/use

Shirley Prater distinctly remembers one of the many clients she's served in her six years as a Community Health Worker (CHW) for Kentucky Homeplace. The client was diabetic, but had run out of medication due to financial challenges.

Part of the submission requirements for NIH Shared Instrumentation and High End Instrumentation Grant Programs is an institutional letter of support.   This letter includes detailed supporting documentation and mulitple level approvals.  Therefore, the VPR office along with PDO are requesting notification now from researchers who may be considering the submission of this type of grant.  The proposals are due to NIH on May 29, 2015.

Yipeng Sui from Changcheng Zhou’s laboratory recently received the American Heart Association Council on Arteriosclerosis, Thrombosis and Vascular Biology Travel Award for Young Investigators. The $1000 award will be used to attend the ATVB|PVD 2015 Scientific Sessions in San Francisco in May. The award is distributed to a select number of young investigators based on the score of a submitted abstract. Yipeng’s abstract is entitled “Intestinal Pregnane X Receptor Links Xenobiotic Exposure And Hypercholesterolemia”.

Next week, KET will feature three University of Kentucky experts discussing cancer care in a set of programs that will accompany the three-part documentary series Cancer: The Emperor of All Maladies by Ken Burns. The series, which will air March 30, 31 and April 1 at 9 p.m., is based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning book The Emperor of All Maladies: A Biography of Cancer by Siddhartha Mukherjee. Dr. John H. Eichhorn, professor of Anesthesiology and Provost’s Distinguished Service Professor at the University of Kentucky College of Medicine, authored a paper earlier in his career titled, "Standards for Patient Monitoring During Anesthesia at Harvard Medical School," which is named in the current issue of the prestigious journal, Anesthesia and Analgesia, as one of the top 20 most important articles in anesthesiology ever written.
