The University of Kentucky’s Igniting Research Collaborations (IRC) program has awarded nearly $600,000 in pilot grants to support cross-college interdisciplinary research.

The Office of the Vice President for Research (OVPR) and the University of Kentucky International Center (UKIC) have announced the second cohort of UKinSPIRE fellows. 

University of Kentucky Markey Cancer Centerresearcher Guan-Yu Xiao, PhD, has received a three-year $747,000 grant from the National Cancer Institute (NCI) to study how lung cancer metastasizes, or spreads to other parts of the body.

University of Kentucky Summer STEM Experiences Camps show what is possible when the university, local schools and community come together to bring STEM to life for youth. 

The University of Kentucky College of Medicine is pleased to announce that after a nationwide search, Noah Weisleder, PhD, has been selected to serve as the chair of molecular and cellular biochemistry.

Dr. Weisleder will begin this role on Sept. 1. In addition, he will serve as a professor with tenure in the regular title series.

Seth Himelhoch, MD, has served as chair of the UK College of Medicine Department of Psychiatry for the last six years. Dr. Himelhoch will soon bid the Commonwealth goodbye, relocating to the University of Chicago as chair of its department of psychiatry and behavioral neuroscience.

Jeremy Swiney, MD, became interested in medicine after shadowing his hometown physician while in high school. Growing up in Magoffin County, Ky., Dr. Swiney witnessed the impact local physicians had on his small town, igniting a passion for serving rural communities. 

A University of Kentucky researcher will be serving as a member of the National Institute of Environmental Health Science (NIEHS)Environmental Health Sciences (EHS) Review Committee. The committee is responsible for the scientific review of multiple grant mechanisms at the NIEHS.

Kaylee Gouge, MD, received her medical doctorate from the UK College of Medicine and is currently in her second year of combined Internal Medicine-Pediatrics residency training, a four-year program that leads to certification in both specialties. 

For years, the University of Kentucky College of Medicine’s Professional Education Preparation Program (PEPP)-Scholars has provided summer academic enrichment activities to rising college freshmen from racially/ethnically underrepresented or rural backgrounds. The goal of this early exposure to the field of medicine carries with it the hope of solidifying their commitment to the career path.
