Dr. Jim Cimino, the inaugural director of the Informatics Institute in the School of Medicine at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), presented "How Do We Fix the Electronic Health Record?" on Thursday, February 25.  Dr. Cimino's presentation was sponsored by the Institute of Biomedical Informatcs, the Center for Clinical andTranslational Science, and the College of Medicine.

Dr. Cimino lead the Laboratory for Informatics Development at the National Institutes of Health's Clinical Center and was a senior scientist at the National Library of Medicine until his recent appointment to the UAB institute. Dr. Cimino provided a brief history of Electronic Health Records (EHRs),  limitations and issues with the current generation of EHRs, his vision of what EHRs can become and the associated benefits, and his prescription for how we can improve the current systems to bring them closer to his vision.
