The innate ability of Cody Bumgardner, PhD, to work with computer systems was evident in high school. Computers were being installed in one of his school’s first computer labs, and when workers unboxed the systems and left for lunch, he snuck into the lab and installed the hardware by the time they returned.

During Beth Oates' fellowship with FASEB, she was the point-person who drafted, edited and fielded input from scientific societies regarding commercial airlines restrictions on animal transportation. The letter was sent to the Chief Science Officer, Robert Hampshire, PhD, and Secretary of Transportation, Pete Buttigieg in June and had over 90 signatures including various science organization like American Society for Microbiology, American Association of Immunologist as well as industry companies like Pfizer, Charles River Laboratories and The Jackson Laboratory.

No matter the question, no matter the person who asked it, 7-month-old Ehdisyn Marmolejos had a habit of shaking her head “no” in response.

But when her father, Hal Marmolejos, asked her one day if he should go to medical school, it was the first time he ever saw her nod “yes.”

The moment brought tears to Hal’s eyes. He jumped up and down.

“That experience opened my eyes to the world of medicine,” Hal said. “It was a moment of clarity, that everything in my life had been leading me toward becoming a doctor.”
