University of Kentucky College of Medicine student Gerek Meinhardt will bring home his second bronze medal as part of Team USA in the men's team foil competition at the delayed 2020 Olympics. The team defeated Japan 45-31. Meinhardt previously won a bronze medal in the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Games.

Congratulations to Madeline Dunfee, a CHET graduate research assistant, who was awarded a 2021 James S. Brown Graduate Student Award for Research. Maddie is is an MD/PhD student, and is in the fifth year of her program to earn both an MD from the College of Medicine and a Ph.D. in Epidemiology and Biostatistics from the College of Public Health.

The University of Kentucky Human Development Institute is leading a five year Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental Disabilities (LEND) grant from the Health Resources and Services Administration Maternal and Child Health Bureau in partnership with the University of Louisville and Eastern Kentucky University. LEND programs share the overall mission of improving the health of infants, children and adolescents with, or at risk for, neurodevelopmental and related disabilities including autism spectrum disorder (ASD).

The UK-ADRC is pleased announce the Request For Applications for the UK-ADRC Development Project. This newly established pilot program is supported by the NIH Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center Grant. The program is aimed at junior investigators (postdoctoral fellows, assistant professors, senior research associates, or clinical fellows). We anticipate funds for several awards at $50,000 per year. A new University of Kentucky College of Medicine study published in the Journal of Biological Chemistry provides foundational information about SARS-CoV-2’s spike protein.

The spike protein is found on the surface of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, and is responsible for its entry into host cells. Because of this function, it is the focus of most COVID-19 vaccines including the Pfizer/BioNTech and Moderna mRNA vaccines.
