The University of Kentucky’s NIH-funded Resource Center for Stable Isotope-Resolved Metabolomics presents its Metabolomics Symposium & Workshop with a one-day Symposium on July 26 followed by a 12-day, hands-on Workshop through August 7, 2015.

Symposium

The one-day Symposium will feature a poster session and presentations from leaders in the stable isotope-resolved metabolomics (SIRM) field – as well as researchers from around the world who are successfully using this technique to further their studies in a wide range of research.  Speakers use stable isotope labeling to investigate metabolic changes in many physiological systems and advancing diagnosis and treatment of many clinical conditions, such as brain and cardiac disorders as well as cancer.

Meet and Greet Session

All attendees are invited to participate in a pre-event “Meet and Greet” to take place July 25 at 6 pm, featuring heavy Hors d’oeuvre.

Workshop: Stable Isotope-Resolved Metabolomics: Experimental Design, Methods, and Data AnalysisThe hands-on Workshop is appropriate for researchers who wish to integrate stable isotope tracer-enabled studies of metabolism into their experimental design, but is limited to 20 participants.

Attendees of the Workshop will gain working knowledge in the application of SIRM to fundamental biochemistry research in the life sciences and bench-to-bedside translational research. The Workshop will feature demonstrations and hands-on wet lab and dry lab practice including:

  • Stable isotope tracer-based biological experiments
  • Cell and tissue processing, polar and non-polar metabolite extraction, and preparation for MS and NMR analysis
  • Data acquisition with the Center’s Mass and NMR Spectrometers
  • Large-scale analysis of MS and NMR data for metabolites and their stable isotope labeling patterns

Registration for the Workshop includes the Symposium:  Those wishing to attend the Workshop are encouraged to submit poster abstracts that feature research including (or with plans to include) stable isotope-resolved metabolomics.

Registration

Registration for the July 26th Symposium is $30, which includes coffee breaks, lunch and dinner, as well as the Meet and Greet on July 25.

The 12-day Workshop fee, which covers the Meet and Greet, the one-day Symposium and includes on-campus accommodations, is $3750. The Workshop fee includes breakfast and lunch each day. Attendees are responsible for their own travel arrangements and costs. Some scholarships are available to offset travel costs for students and post-doctoral fellows whose poster abstracts demonstrate excellence in the science of SIRM.
