Members of the Gold Humanism Honor Society (GHHS) recently brought seasonal joy and meaningful service to the heart of our community when they joined the annual “Trunk or Treat” event hosted by One Parent Scholar House.

With candy in hand and festive spirits high, the team of medical students helped distribute treats and prizes to more than 150 children — many of whom are patients at Golisano Children’s Hospital at UK and Kentucky Clinic South, or the young children of single-parent students working to earn degrees at the University of Kentucky.

The GHHS is dedicated to recognizing medical students, residents, and faculty who show exemplary compassion, respect, and service in patient care. Through their participation in community-facing events such as this, GHHS members live its mission outside the classroom and clinic.

One Parent Scholar House is a Lexington-based program for single parents who are full-time students in a post-secondary educational institution. The primary purpose of the program is to help parents and their young children develop the educational and family life skills needed to achieve self-sufficiency.

By greeting children, offering treats, and sharing smiles, our medical students took a moment to connect with families simply and authentically. In helping create a fun experience for those navigating health challenges or unique educational journeys, this event reminds us that impactful scholarship and healing extend well beyond textbooks and white coats. It offers a meaningful example of how future physicians can engage with and support the broader community they serve.
