Researchers from the University of Kentucky Markey Cancer Center made a strong impact at the 2025 American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO) annual meeting this fall. ASTRO is the premier global gathering for radiation oncology professionals, and this year, the UK Markey Cancer Center team presented a diverse portfolio of innovative studies and clinical advancements.
Key highlights:
- Morgan Levy, MD, radiation oncology resident, received the prestigious ASTRO Breast Cancer Research Foundation Travel Grant, recognizing her contributions to breast cancer research.
- Enes Atici, MD, and Aradhana Kaushal, MD, presented “In the Eye of the Beholder”, a study focused on improving rural oncology equity through lean process enhancements in uveal melanoma brachytherapy.
- Atici also led a presentation on pituitary adenoma radiosurgery, exploring dosimetry factors linked to post-treatment pituitary function.
- Verny Rodriguez, MD, shared findings from a Phase 2 trial showing that sparing secondary lymphoid organs during lung SBRT significantly reduces immune suppression and improves overall survival.
- Jovan Pierre-Charles, MD, presented research on risk-adapted SBRT for peripherally located lung tumors,emphasizing patient-reported outcomes.
Markey Cancer Center researchers contributed multiple retrospectives and dosimetry studies, including:
- Radiosurgery for intracranial arteriovenous malformations
- Spatially fractionated radiotherapy for unresectable bulky tumors
- Hyperarc stereotactic radiosurgery for ventricular tachycardia
- Radiosurgery for single and multiple brain metastases
