Biography

Dr. Murphy graduated from Dalhousie University in 1978 with MD. Dr Murphy became board-certified in Anesthesia by the Royal College of Physicians Canada after completion of his 4-year residency in Anesthesia at Dalhousie University.  Following this post-graduate program, Dr. Murphy continued his training in Western Australia by completing cardiac anesthesia (Royal Perth Hospital) and pediatric/neonatal anesthesia (Princess Margaret Hospital) fellowships during a Senior Registrar appointment. He returned to Canada in 1985. Clinical experience in transesophageal echocardiography started in 1994 while employed in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and certification in Perioperative Echocardiography was obtained from the National Board of Echocardiography in 2001. Dr Murphy has been on faculty at the University of Kentucky since 2002.

Dr Murphy is also board-certified in Addiction Medicine by the American Board of Addiction Medicine; he attends a UK outpatient clinic every Tuesday afternoon (First Bridge Clinic). Several UK anesthesia residents have taken a one-month elective in Addiction Medicine, with out-patient and in-patient exposure via ACES (Addiction Consultation and Education Services) in the past 5 years. ACES is staffed by internists and hospitalists and provide a consultation service for inpatients. ACES links patient to follow-up in First Bridge Clinic as discharge planning being formulated.

SPECIAL INTERESTS:

Dr. Murphy has special interests in Closed circuit anesthesia (Fresh Gas Flow equal to metabolic oxygen), including liquid injection of volatile agent(s) into the anesthesia circuit, Transesophageal echocardiography, via clinical teaching and HeartWorksTM high fidelity TEE/TTE simulator, Informatics, and Awake fiberoptic intubation.
