Biography and Education

Biography

I’m a third year MD/PhD student at the University of Kentucky, currently researching lipoprotein biology and atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease in the lab of Dr. Scott Gordon. My particular focus is on the structure and anti-atherogenic functions of high-density lipoprotein. My long-term goal is to work as a physician-scientist in a clinical subspecialty of internal medicine (maybe pulm/crit, preventive cardiology, or ID?) both seeing patients and performing translational research. With my work, I hope to increase understanding of the molecular mechanisms of ASCVD and other high-mortality chronic diseases in order to improve prevention and management.

When I'm not in the lab, you can find me baking, gardening, hiking with my wife, Gwen, and our daughter, Claire, or playing the banjo or the viola!

Education

I grew up in Salt Lake City, UT and attended Brigham Young University for my undergraduate, graduating with a degree in Cell Biology and Physiology, with a minor in Spanish. I have previously united my Spanish fluency and clinical medicine interest by working as a trained medical interpreter. My previous research experience during undergraduate and medical studies includes projects related to maternal-fetal immunology, pediatric infectious disease, diet-gut microbiome dynamics, and osteoarthritis pathogenesis.
