Research

WE ARE A NEUROSCIENCE LAB WITH STRONG INTERESTS IN THE IMPACT OF INSULIN ON THE BRAIN.

Intersection of two fields: dysregulation of calcium-dependent cellular mechanisms of learning and memory with brain aging and links between peripheral metabolic dysregulation and cognitive decline. We have shifted our focus from understanding cognitive decline with aging using single cell electrophysiology and imaging of calcium, to understanding calcium dysregulation in networks of neurons and astrocytes in vivo, using somatosensory cortex 2-photon imaging. We hope this approach, combined with intranasal insulin, can infer on gait and ambulatory dysregulation with age and also identify novel therapies for reducing falls in the elderly. We have modified the beta subunit of the insulin receptor and have published four brain aging and insulin study to offset cognitive decline
