Research
Research in the Mishra laboratory focuses on defining the role of the novel hormone asprosin in the regulation of metabolic health. Asprosin was discovered in 2016–2017 through studies of individuals with the extremely rare genetic disorder Neonatal Progeroid Syndrome (NPS). Since its discovery, extensive work over the past decade has identified asprosin’s receptors and established its key physiological functions, including stimulation of hepatic gluconeogenesis, regulation of appetite, and control of thirst.
Building on these foundational discoveries, the Mishra laboratory investigates the physiological, cellular, and molecular mechanisms underlying asprosin-mediated control of metabolism. Current projects in the lab examine the role of asprosin in neurogenic hypertension and define its functions in pancreatic biology. Together, these studies aim to uncover previously unrecognized metabolic actions of asprosin and to advance therapeutic strategies for the treatment of diabetes, obesity, and related cardiometabolic disorders.
