Research

My research program is dedicated to understanding how chronic viral infections, together with metabolic conditions such as metabolic syndrome, shape innate and adaptive immune responses, ultimately influencing viral pathogenesis, immune protection, and vaccine efficacy. I investigate how the sites and dynamics of viral replication in peripheral and central nervous system tissues affect immune recognition and response, and how immune pressures—particularly from T cells—interact with viral diversity and evolution. My work aims to define the mechanisms by which viral replication and metabolic dysregulation alter immune cell function, viral clearance, and long-term outcomes.

A key area of my research examines how metabolic disorders impair or skew the quality and durability of immune responses to infection and vaccination, contributing to increased susceptibility and poorer outcomes in affected populations. By combining advanced immunological assays, animal models, and high-resolution sequencing, I study how viruses exploit metabolic dysregulation to evade immune control, with the goal of informing more effective interventions.

Through collaborative projects integrating mass spectrometry, structural studies, and systems immunology, my ultimate goal is to identify correlates of protection and immune escape mechanisms strengthening preparedness for current and future emerging viral threats.
