Three first-year medical students from the University of Kentucky College of Medicine who have a passion for expanding health care access have produced an original and creative video, “Nosotros Para Vosotros,” meaning “Us for You” that explains the health care needs of underserved populations at home and around the world. Their video entry is part of a nationwide competition with the winning entry receiving the opportunity to work with Timmy Global Health, an Indianapolis-based nonprofit that expands access to health care and empowers students and volunteers to tackle today’s most pressing global health challenges.

Several months ago, Connor Appelman, Kandice Roberts and Anita Shanker entered the Global Health Essay Challenge and their essay was chosen as one of 10 finalists in the nation, giving them the opportunity to submit a video.

“This would be an incredible opportunity to learn from a world class organization and further develop skills that will benefit us in our future careers as physicians,” Appelman said. “It can sometimes be overwhelming to think about some of the challenges providers face in health care, especially on a global scale, but programs like Timmy Global Health give us the chance to step outside of the classroom and do something about it.”

He added, “We are competing, in part, to learn more about these issues and about ourselves. Through our experiences in medicine, we have all realized the problems that communities face at home and abroad have many commonalities. These competitions give us an opportunity to step back and look at medicine from a community perspective which will be a valuable in our future careers.”

To view the video, go to:  Nosotros Para Vosotros and one click will cast a vote for Appelman, Roberts and Shanker. Viewers may cast one vote per day. The voting ends Tuesday, April 11 at 11:59 p.m.
