Kevin Duncan, MSRS, RRA, RT(R)(ARRT), a registered radiologist assistant at UK HealthCare, has been named one of three national recipients of the 2025 "I Am the Gold Standard" award by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT).
Duncan's achievement is particularly remarkable not only for the impact of his career but also for the perseverance he demonstrated during a challenging personal journey. In late 2024, while completing his Master of Science in Radiologic Sciences at Midwestern State University, Duncan underwent open-heart surgery. Despite facing a difficult recovery, he continued working full-time until his procedure and completed his master’s degree just a month later.
Now, as the first registered radiologist assistant (RRA) at UK, Duncan is leading the way in expanding advanced practice roles within diagnostic radiology.
“I was genuinely surprised when I received the news. I was speechless,” he said. “I don't do anything extraordinary; I just treat each patient like family, making everyone feel like a VIP. I take pride in providing the highest quality imaging, even when I wasn’t at my best.”
With more than 360,000 radiologic technologists certified in the United States, Duncan’s recognition places him among an elite group. The ARRT award honors technologists who demonstrate leadership in quality and safety, patient experience, and advocacy for the profession, areas Duncan has championed throughout his 16-year career at UK HealthCare.
During his time with UK, he’s trained hundreds of students and colleagues in sonography, championed patient-centered care, and helped design the ultrasound scanning rotation for radiology residents. Duncan also serves as an elected member of the University’s Staff Senate, actively contributing to institutional growth beyond his clinical role.
In his new role as a radiologic assistant, Duncan is committed to elevating the value of nonphysician practitioners in radiology.
“As the first advanced practice provider in Diagnostic Radiology at UK HealthCare, I am excited to work alongside an amazing team to continue providing the same care I was previously providing — just at the next level,” said Duncan. “I hope to help share the importance of having highly qualified and trained professionals, like RRAs, as part of the radiologist-led team.”
