As part of our LCME Update series, we are highlighting how key processes across the College of Medicine support a consistent, transparent, and student-centered learning environment. Standard 10 focuses on how medical schools select, assign, and support students throughout their educational journey.
Within our medical education program, student selection is guided by mission-aligned processes designed to identify applicants who are well-prepared to succeed and serve the needs of Kentucky communities. Through a rolling admissions model, candidates are screened, interviewed, and reviewed by the College of Medicine Admissions Committee (CMAC), which includes faculty and medical students representing all four campuses. The committee follows established policies to ensure a fair and consistent review process, evaluating each applicant’s experiences, attributes, academic metrics, and premedical competencies.
Applicants indicate their campus preference during the secondary application process and interview at their campus of choice, allowing early engagement with their future learning environment. Final campus assignments are made by the CMAC, balancing applicant preferences with institutional priorities to ensure a consistent and high-quality educational experience across all sites.
Clear expectations further support student success. The College’s Technical Standards outline the essential abilities required for admission and progression, including core competencies in observation, communication, motor function, intellectual and integrative abilities, and behavioral and social attributes. These standards provide transparency and help ensure that all students are prepared to meet the demands of medical training, with or without reasonable accommodations.
Together, this structured, mission-driven approach supports the development of future physicians prepared to meet the healthcare needs of the Commonwealth.
