Peter Sawaya, M.D., has been elected to Mastership in the American College of Physicians (MACP) by the Board of Regents. MACP is conferred only on a select number of worthy candidates who are deemed distinguished through a combination of achievements, including the practice of internal medicine, academic contributions to the specialty and service to the American College of Physicians (ACP).
Sawaya has been a member and active participant in the ACP since 1984. “I believe in its core value and tremendous role in educating students, trainees and junior faculty,” Sawaya said.
Over the past year or so, without Sawaya’s knowledge, a number of his colleagues, peers and/or students assembled a dossier outlining the impact he has had on our community, the profession of medicine, medical science and his patients.
In making decisions about each candidate’s suitability for MACP, the Committee considers qualities such as strength of character, integrity, perseverance, leadership, compassion and devotion, as well as clinical expertise and commitment to advancing the art and science of medicine. Emphasis was placed on Sawaya’s service as a teacher and mentor, advocacy for quality in internal medicine, commitment to social justice and creation of communities of medicine. Those elected to the MACP are seen as educational innovators, humanists and learner-teachers who inspire others to seek high standards and excellence in Internal Medicine.
“I am humbled to be a Master,” Sawaya said. “I will use the title to enhance my ability to further spread the word about ACP’s core value and its role in forming young physicians into impactful participants in their practices.”
