Vishwas R. Talwalkar, MD, professor of orthopaedic surgery at the University of Kentucky College of Medicine, has been elected the director-elect of the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery (ABOS).
“It’s a great honor and responsibility to serve on the board of directors for the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery,” Dr. Talwalkar said. “The ABOS celebrates its 90th birthday this year. It is an independent organization that works with other groups to guide the education and certification of orthopaedic surgeons throughout their careers. It serves a vital role in our society to protect the public and promote the safe, competent, and ethical practice of orthopaedic surgery. I am very grateful for this amazing opportunity.”
Dr. Talwalkar specializes in pediatric orthopaedic surgery. He is chief of staff at Shriners Children’s Lexington and chief of pediatric orthopaedics at UK HealthCare, the UK College of Medicine's clinical enterprise. In addition, he is a prolific researcher and is regularly invited to write book chapters. This summer, Dr. Talwalkar served as an ABOS oral examiner for the fifth consecutive year.
He earned his MD from Washington University School of Medicine, completed residency training at Vanderbilt University, and obtained a pediatric orthopaedic fellowship from Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children.
The ABOS was founded in 1934 as a private, voluntary, nonprofit, independent organization to serve the best interests of the public and the medical profession. These interests are achieved through the ABOS by establishing standards for the education of orthopaedic surgeons. These standards are evaluated by the ABOS through examinations and practice evaluations. More information can be found at www.abos.org.
